Antonio López-Istúriz White

Antonio López-Istúriz White is Secretary-General of the European People’s Party (EPP), largest European political party of the centre-right and Member of the European Parliament of the Spanish centre-right People’s Party (Partido Popular), he is also Secretary Treasurer of the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies and the Secretary-General of the Centrist Democrat International.


He has been in Brussels since 1997 when he worked as an assistant to the People’s Partydelegation at the European Parliamentuntil 1999, when he was called by then President of the Spanish Government José María Aznarto become his personal assistant for almost four years. In 2002 he returned to Brussels upon his election as Secretary-General of the European People’s Party, two years later he was elected on the lists of his party as a MEP, keeping both offices up to this date.

In the European Parliamenthe sits in the Committee on the Internal Market and Consumer Protection and is a Substitute on the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Subcommittee on Security and Defence. He is also Member of the Delegation for relations with the United States, Delegation for relations with Israel and Delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean. Antonio López-Istúriz White is also President of the European Union-United Arab Emirates Parliamentary Friendship Group (UAE).

He is a strong supporter of the EU-US relations, and since his election to the post of the EPP Secretary General he dedicated his time and energy in developing close relationship with Washington. He is a very outspoken fighter for freedom in Cuba, and has been very active in Cuban dissident movement in Europe and the US.

Antonio López-Istúriz White is recipient of the 2013 Parliamentarian Prize – Eurodiputado del Año – MEP of the Year – awarded by the Asociación de Periodistas Parlamentarios – Spanish Parliamentarian Journalists Association.
